Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa Awards Grant to Adult Learning Center

CEDAR FALLS—Special grants totaling more than $300,000 were handed out Friday at the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa’s annual Celebration of Community event.
Hawkeye Community College received a $200,000 grant for its new Adult Learning Center building project under construction in downtown Waterloo. The new center will combine the programs and services offered at the current Metro Center and Martin Luther King Jr. Center and allow space to expand programs in the three-story, 45,000-square-foot building. With the grant, the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa will name the Registration and Community Connections Suite of the new facility.
Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley received a $50,000 grant for its Together We Can campaign. The grant is a matching gift grant and will be used to encourage others to give to the endowment building portion of the campaign to help offset future operational costs associated with expanded facilities including a new teen center in Waterloo and updates to its current Lime Street Clubhouse. The Community Foundation will match gifts up to $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Cedar Valley Youth Development Fund, a fund of CFNEIA. Gifts to the fund are eligible for the Endow Iowa 25 percent state tax credit.
Another $50,000 was granted to Try Pie from the Gary, Becky, Eric and Elizabeth Bertch Family Fund held with the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. This grant made by the Bertch family from their donor advised fund will fully fund a new storefront in downtown Waterloo. Try Pie, a program under Link Christian Community Development, engages teen girls using a mix of faith with real-life work and customer service experience through its pie making business. The new storefront will allow the group to grow its employment capacity to 20 young women and increase visibility of their pies.
Also announced at the event were the winners of CFNEIA’s 2017 Good Things Happening photo contest. Three $1,000 runner-up grant awards and one $5,000 grand prize grant were directed to nonprofits selected by the winning photographers. Runner-up awards went to Chris Hofeldt who selected Cedar Valley Hospice, Lindsay Pieters who selected Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity and Adam Amdor who selected The Covenant Foundation. Diana McIntosh was awarded the grand prize, selecting Sing Me to Heaven as the grant recipient.
The Good Things Happening photo contest was a four-week contest in September that encouraged people to submit photos of the good things they saw happening in Black Hawk County.
